John Cena Open to Retirement Match Against The Rock
As speculation mounts over John Cena’s final opponent, the WWE legend has expressed interest in a career-ending match against his iconic rival, The Rock. During an appearance at Fan Expo Denver, Cena responded to a fan’s suggestion, stating that while he doesn’t choose his opponents, a final match with The Rock “would be cool.”
The two previously headlined WrestleMania 28 and 29. Their first encounter, billed as “Once in a Lifetime,” saw The Rock emerge victorious. A year later, Cena won the 2013 Royal Rumble and went on to defeat The Rock at WrestleMania 29 for the WWE Championship in a symbolic passing-of-the-torch moment.
Their paths recently crossed at Elimination Chamber, where Cena, seemingly at The Rock’s behest, attacked Cody Rhodes. With Cena set to defend his WWE Championship against Rhodes at SummerSlam, there is potential for The Rock to interfere, possibly setting the stage for a historic final showdown. However, The Rock’s demanding schedule remains a significant obstacle. Regardless of his opponent, Cena’s final match is poised to be one of the most anticipated events in WWE history.
WWE Reportedly Pivots from Roman Reigns vs. Bron Breakker Singles Match
Recent reports suggest that WWE may be altering its SummerSlam plans for a singles match between Roman Reigns and Bron Breakker. According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Radio, the company might instead book a tag team match pitting Reigns and Jey Uso against Breakker and Bronson Reed.
The storyline began on the Raw after WrestleMania 41 when Breakker, aligning with Seth Rollins and Paul Heyman, speared Reigns through a barricade. After a multi-month absence, Reigns returned to save Jey Uso and CM Punk from an assault by Breakker and Reed. The following week on Raw featured further confrontations between Reigns and Breakker, culminating in a brawl where Jey Uso evened the odds, leading to an embrace between the real-life cousins.
While a one-on-one encounter between Reigns and Breakker seems inevitable, WWE may be opting to build the feud with a tag team match at SummerSlam, potentially saving the high-stakes singles bout for a later event like WrestleMania 42.
Report Details Original Plans for AJ Styles at TNA Slammiversary
AJ Styles made a landmark return to TNA at its Slammiversary pay-per-view, his first live appearance for the promotion since 2014. On-screen, Styles endorsed new X-Division Champion Leon Slater, but original plans for his segment were reportedly different.
According to Sports Illustrated, Styles was initially slated for a segment with his longtime rival and partner, Frankie Kazarian. Sources suggested the plan was changed due to WWE’s potential reluctance to hint at or commit Styles to a future match in TNA. TNA President Carlos Silva later confirmed that the creative plans for Styles’ appearance “changed a few times.”
Styles is widely regarded as the most decorated performer in TNA history, with multiple world, tag team, and X-Division title reigns. Since joining WWE, he has become a two-time WWE Champion and Grand Slam Champion. Styles will now look to add another title to his legacy when he challenges Dominik Mysterio for the Intercontinental Championship at SummerSlam.
