The San Francisco 49ers have officially opened training camp at their SAP Performance Facility in Santa Clara ahead of the upcoming NFL season. While the team’s roster will continue to evolve through cuts, signings, and trades before Week 1, a recent analysis suggests a significant move could be on the horizon.
Jacob Infante of the Pro Football Network has predicted that the 49ers may trade wide receiver Jauan Jennings during training camp. The prediction stems from the team’s financial situation, with Jennings reportedly seeking a new contract before his current deal expires.
“The San Francisco 49ers find themselves in a tight spot,” Infante noted. “They have the likes of Brock Purdy, Nick Bosa, Brandon Aiyuk, and Fred Warner on massive long-term deals. They could find themselves fielding trade offers if they aren’t willing to pay Jennings what he wants.”
Jennings, 28, is entering the final year of a two-year, $11.89 million extension he signed last May and is seeking more long-term security. In his four-year career, he has accumulated 155 receptions for 1,938 yards and 13 touchdowns. He is coming off a productive season that saw him record 77 catches for 975 yards and six touchdowns.
A potential trade would come at a challenging time for the 49ers’ receiving corps. The team is already adjusting to the offseason trade of Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders and is anticipating that star receiver Brandon Aiyuk may miss the start of the season while recovering from a torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus. Parting with a reliable target like Jennings could significantly impact the 49ers’ offense and their prospects for a return to the playoffs.
