Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese is on the verge of a WNBA-mandated suspension after accumulating her seventh technical foul of the season. Under league rules, a player receives a one-game suspension without pay upon receiving their eighth technical foul.
Reese was assessed her seventh technical during the first quarter of the Sky’s recent loss to the Minnesota Lynx, reportedly following an off-camera interaction with an official after a common foul was called. With this latest infraction just 22 games into her professional career, Reese now leads the WNBA in technical fouls. The next closest player is Shakira Austin of the Washington Mystics, with five.
The pace of Reese’s technicals is notable, as she accumulated only four during her entire final season in college. Her first technical in the WNBA came in the season opener against the Indiana Fever, where both she and Indiana’s Aliyah Boston were penalized following an on-court incident involving Caitlin Clark.
A potential suspension carries significant financial consequences, as it would require Reese to forfeit a game check. The issue of player compensation has been a prominent topic for Reese, who has been outspoken about her salary and league negotiations.
During the recent WNBA All-Star weekend, Reese criticized a proposal from the league to the players’ union regarding a new collective bargaining agreement. “It was an eye-opener for me… It was disrespectful, the things that we were sent back,” she told reporters, adding, “It’s important to be able to be vocal. If I sit back, it looks like I don’t care.”
Her comments echo previous statements made last October, when she noted that her WNBA salary alone would be insufficient to cover her living expenses.
