The New York Mets’ significantly improved farm system has positioned the team to make impactful moves at the trade deadline. The organization possesses several Top 100 prospects, creating a pool of assets coveted throughout the league.
While President of Baseball Operations David Stearns is typically reluctant to trade top prospects, the team’s depth, particularly among right-handed pitchers like Brandon Sproat, Nolan McLean, and Jonah Tong, provides valuable flexibility for potential deals.
With bullpen assistance a priority before the July 31 deadline, a familiar name has emerged as a possible target. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Mets could pursue a trade for former prospect Mike Vasil.
Vasil, ranked as the Mets’ No. 11 prospect entering the year by MLB.com, was lost to the Philadelphia Phillies in the December 2023 Rule 5 Draft before eventually signing with the Chicago White Sox. He has since become a key piece of Chicago’s bullpen, posting a stellar 2.53 ERA with 47 strikeouts in 64 innings pitched this season.
A reunion with Vasil could be part of a larger transaction. The Mets have also been heavily linked to White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr., and a package deal could allow the team to address multiple needs simultaneously. While a trade for Vasil remains speculative, the logic of reacquiring a successful, big-league-ready arm to fortify the bullpen presents a compelling option for New York.
