Police in New Smyrna Beach and South Daytona are investigating a suspected murder-suicide after a 61-year-old woman and her 62-year-old boyfriend were found dead in their respective homes on Tuesday.
The incident unfolded on the morning of July 22, when New Smyrna Beach police were alerted by an out-of-state caller who reported a disturbing phone conversation with the woman. According to a joint press release, the woman told the caller she had killed her boyfriend and intended to take her own life.
When officers responded to the woman’s residence in New Smyrna Beach and attempted to make contact, she died by suicide. No officers were injured during the response.
Following the event, New Smyrna Beach police requested that authorities in South Daytona conduct a welfare check at the home of the woman’s boyfriend. There, South Daytona police officers discovered the 62-year-old man deceased.
The investigation is being handled jointly by the two departments. South Daytona police are leading the homicide investigation, while New Smyrna Beach police are handling the suicide case. The identities of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of their next of kin.
