Arsenal has completed the signing of Swedish international striker Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting Lisbon on a long-term contract.
The 27-year-old arrives after a highly successful two-year spell in Portugal, where he amassed a prolific 97 goals in 102 appearances. During his time with Sporting, Gyökeres helped the team secure back-to-back Primeira Liga titles and a domestic cup, finishing as the league’s top scorer in both seasons. His strong form has carried over to international duty, where he has scored 12 goals in his last 17 games for Sweden.
Originally from Stockholm, Gyökeres began his career at IF Brommapojkarna before joining Brighton & Hove Albion in 2018. Following loan spells at Swansea City, St. Pauli, and Coventry City, he made a permanent move to Coventry in 2021, leading them to the Championship Play-Off final in 2023.
Sporting Director Andrea Berta praised the signing, stating, “Viktor is an exceptional talent and has consistently demonstrated he has the qualities and winning mentality required of a top-level centre-forward. His physicality, intelligence and work ethic make him a perfect fit for our vision.”
Manager Mikel Arteta added, “Viktor has so many qualities. He is a quick and powerful presence up front, with incredible goalscoring numbers at club and international levels. He brings a clinical edge with a high conversion rate of chances into goals, with his intelligent movement in the box making him a constant threat.”
Gyökeres will wear the number 14 shirt and will immediately join the squad for its pre-season tour in Asia. The transfer is subject to the completion of regulatory processes.
