Ramy Ghaly, Professor of Oncology at Ain Shams Medicine, revealed in a special statement to “Youm7”, that there are developments in the use of multi-intensity radiotherapy to treat head and neck tumors, and to treat prostate tumors, stressing that there is a boom in the use of radiotherapy with modern devices. , confirming the development of radiotherapy from two-dimensional to three-dimensional to multi-intensity.
Oncologists from health insurance, Kasr Al-Ainy medicine, and Ain Shams medicine
. added During the Arab-African International Scientific Conference on Cancer, currently held in Cairo, the multi-intensity radiation sheds radiation on the tumor by drawing the places of cancer on the CT scan, and rebuilding the shape of the tumor for the healthy cells around it, where radiation affects the tumor through the rotation of the device in certain places, and its different radiation capacity It surrounds the tumor, and reduces the side effects of the healthy places around it, which targets the tumor and gives it a large dose of radiation without damaging the tissues around it.
He explained, that one of the examples that confirm the success of multi-intensity radiotherapy is its use to treat head and neck tumors, adding, we were able to reach very high cure rates by preserving the organ, as if there is a tumor in the throat, we give radiotherapy and the patient can be cured without the need to remove the larynx. Therefore, the patient does not lose his voice, as in this case, surgery is dispensed with.

He pointed out that multi-intensity radiotherapy is effective in head and neck tumors, as the patient avoids surgery that leads to loss of voice by removing the larynx, or installing a whistle in the neck, stressing that we were able to compensate for this and treat prostate tumors through modern technology, and these devices are available in Egypt In government places, and treatment of these tumors without resorting to surgery.

He said, his idea is that its side effects are less because there is no longer the need to make safety edges surrounding the tumor. With the new technique, the device moves with the movement of the “patient’s breath” and the radiation dose moves with the same patient, and the tumor is imaged internally during the administration of the radiation dose by CT scan as if we see Tumor during radiotherapy, as the tumor shrinks and disappears.
He stressed, that determining radiotherapy sessions according to the type of tumor, as in prostate tumors, which radiotherapy is a radical treatment, the patient is given 38 sessions, lung tumors about 30 sessions because it is also a radical treatment, and head and neck tumors from 30 to 35 sessions depending on the type of tumor, And brain tumors use radiotherapy because chemotherapy does not reach brain tumors, as it represents a buffer for such treatments to enter. tumor again.
He added, that early detection is necessary to treat tumors and recover completely, the earlier we discover the tumor, the higher the recovery rate, explaining that radiotherapy has the advantage that it cuts off the blood supply to the tumor, so it shrinks and prevents the proliferation of cancer cells, and they disappear completely, explaining that it is effective in treating head and neck tumors. The prostate is very large.
