Kyrie Irving’s situation has changed in recent hours. The New York government has authorized him to train with his colleagues in the team’s facilities, something that responds to the fact that they understand that the HSS Training Center is a private building while the Barclays Center is a public space; that is, only the second remains under the mandate that states that unvaccinated people cannot access.
Such information is positive for the Nets and Irving, but it has not created much satisfaction for it. The reality is that the New York star is still unable to play home games (41 of the regular season), which causes an uncertainty that is felt from the offices to the locker room. Kevin Durant does not hide that they are not clear about what will happen in the future and that he hopes his teammate can play with them every game.
“We want him here for everything. Training, home games, target practice. Hopefully we can solve this. It’s always tough when guys are in and out of the lineup, especially when it comes to a starter like Kyrie. I don’t know what the plan is right now… So you can just keep playing and focus on what we are doing right now. Once it is resolved, we will continue to move forward, “he tells Brian Lewis of New York Post.
Durant wants Irving playing, but clearly doubts having him on and off the team is the right thing to do. In the face of chemistry training and establishing game patterns, it could be a brake … and even a distraction. KD may think the team is good enough with him and James Harden. KD can understand that having Irving part-time hurts more than helps. KD is the franchise player (he has renewed for 4 years and 198 million dollars). You have to listen to KD – not just us, but the organization.
If Irving continues to be determined not to get vaccinated – one must not be invited to believe that he will change his mind – Durant may have a lot of weight in what ends up happening. Obviously, the responsibility to determine what to do lies with the coach (Steve Nash) and the general manager (Sean Marks), but in that decision making it is certain that it will not be left out to satisfy his franchise player.
