According to football finance expert Kieran Maguire, Liverpool possesses the financial strength to acquire Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, regardless of a potential departure for Darwin Nunez.
Maguire told BBC Sport that despite significant activity, Liverpool could spend another £200-£250 million and remain within the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). This summer, the club has already committed approximately £265 million for players including Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, and Jeremie Frimpong. These expenditures have been partially offset by an initial £115 million recouped from the sales of Luis Diaz, Jarell Quansah, Caoimhin Kelleher, and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Maguire dismissed speculation linking a potential Nunez sale to Saudi club Al-Hilal with Liverpool’s pursuit of Isak from Newcastle, both of which have ownership ties to Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). He suggested that connecting the two deals was a case of “making two plus two equal five,” stating there is insufficient evidence to support the theory of a reciprocal arrangement.
“I suspect that Liverpool are likely to be the biggest beneficiary of this, rather than a PIF club,” Maguire said, emphasizing that Newcastle does not want to sell Isak. He added that Al-Hilal’s interest in Nunez is a straightforward move for an available player. “There are plenty of strikers that they could have bought,” he noted. “It just so happens that Nunez is effectively available, and therefore they decided to pursue that as an option.”
