A bride’s parents are suing a Brooklyn hotel and a wedding planner for $5 million because they claim their daughter’s big day was ruined because the venue wouldn’t let them turn up the music.
Marjorie and Russell Newman, who spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on their daughter Jessica Alovis’ wedding, have taken legal action against Brooklyn Pier 1 Hotel after they allegedly failed to disclose a ‘severe’ noise restriction at the venue.
The Newmans said in a lawsuit filed last Monday in Brooklyn Supreme Court that the couple’s first dance was ruined. They said the DJ refused to turn up the music, keeping it so low during the celebration that guests could hardly hear it.
In order to continue dancing, the newlyweds and their 200 wedding guests were allegedly forced to squeeze into a ‘dingy’ room off-site meant for 60 people.
‘It was very, very devastating,’ Marjorie, who is also suing their wedding planner, Real Housewives of Miami star Guerdy Abraira, told the New York Post. ‘This was supposed to be her night to shine and it was all taken away from her.’

They say they spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the lavish event, but weren’t told until it was already underway that the music would have to be kept at a ‘woefully low’ level

But what should have been a glorious day for couple became a ‘nightmare’ when the venue allegedly told them after the reception had already begun that there was a new rule restricting any loud noise – which meant they could only play music at a ‘woefully low’ level.
The lawsuit claimed that the ‘horrific’ rule ruined the couple’s first dance, after the DJ refused to turn up the music, which left the new bride ‘hysterically crying.’
Brooklyn Pier 1 Hotel reportedly implemented the noise restriction due to residential condos within the building, and introduced it at least three weeks before the wedding – but the bride’s father, Russell, said the hotel ‘never made them aware.’
‘They never brought us in to say, “This is what it is going to sound like or not sound like,” they never gave us the opportunity to move the venue,’ he explained.
The celebration began in a spacious and well-decorated reception room. But when it came time to dance and play music, the newlyweds claimed they were told they’d have to move to a much smaller, ‘dingy’ room in a building next door, which only fit 60 people and had seating for less than a dozen.
Marjorie and Russell, who spent $150,000 on flowers alone for their daughter’s big day, described it as a bare ‘afterparty’ room.
The couple, who own and run the real estate firm Newman Properties in Manhattan and Long Island, alleged that the hotel did not help them relocate the guests, which ‘interrupted the flow of festivities, confused guests, and prevented less-mobile seniors from attending.’
‘There was nowhere to sit,’ said Marjorie. ‘There was not one flower in that room.
‘Most of the adults, besides our very good friends and family, left at this point because really no one had a clue of what was going on.’
Marjorie said her daughter, who works a social worker, was not even able to ‘throw the bouquet,’ and was left devastated by how her wedding day turned out after months of planning.
‘After about a half hour into this, she was hysterical and crying,’ her father, Russell, told the Post. ‘This is not how she envisioned her dream wedding.’
‘They pulled out the rug from under us,’ he added. ‘Jessica has a problem looking at her wedding album and she gets upset every time she sees the pictures. It was a horrific situation that was avoidable.’

The Newmans, who paid for the entire wedding, are now demanding $5 million from the hotel and Abraira for the ‘destroyed’ event caused by a ‘breach of contract’ and the ‘deceptive concealment of sound restrictions’ which resulted in ‘humiliation, indignity, distress of mind, mental suffering, inconvenience, and physical discomfort,’ according to the lawsuit.
‘There were countless hours spent over at least a one year planning period for what should have been a once in a lifetime special event which was single handily destroyed by the egregious actions of the defendants,’ the lawsuit says.
Lawyer Sanford Rubenstein, who filed the suit for the family with co-counsel Mark Shirian, told DailyMail.com: ‘To turn a beautiful dream into a nightmare and spoil one of the most important days in a girl’s life – her wedding day – in my opinion is an example of corporate greed at its worst.’
Rubenstein also told the Sun: ‘This family is entitled to monetary damages for what happened, and we look forward to a jury deciding what those damages should be.
Representatives for Brooklyn Pier 1 Hotel and Abraira did not return requests for comment.
