Puebla, Pue. The textile sector of the entity has an excess demand for products from the United States, but it also continues to face problems of insecurity due to theft of merchandise and rising prices of raw materials.
Carlos Couttolenc Lopezpresident of the Chamber of the Textile Industry (Citex), region Puebla-Tlaxcalaexplained that since last year exports have resumed, which is beneficial for this sector and they hope it will continue, as long as the increase in container prices in the American Union continues for companies from other parts of the world.
He stressed that they bring an excellent rate of growth and with the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC) better opportunities are coming to stay active at 100% during 2022, making it clear that they are fully reactivated.
In this context, he said that companies from Puebla have an 80% chance of exporting raw materials to the neighboring country to the north due to over-demand, but only 50% have a record in the foreign market.
He explained that currently there is no productive sector that does not require textiles, from vehicle assembly plants to the countryside and agri-food industry.
He referred that in 2020 during the pandemic, the textile sector it worked in red numbers, but the following year there was a slight economic recovery, but that is not enough to make investments, for the moment, in new machinery and with better technology.
costs
Couttolenc López said that the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine is bringing effects to the price of cotton and polyester, since this first input rose 100 percent.
“Gas prices affect us, even if they are on the other side of the world, they affect us, which is what happens with cotton that, even if it comes from other markets, are world prices,” said the director of Citex.
Likewise, in relation to cotton, he commented that there is an incidence of thefts from motor carriers when accounting for 20 cases, a situation that is worrying because each one of the shipments has a value of 75,000 dollars, an input that serves no more than another textile industry to transform it, so it may end up in the hands of someone who is in the informal sector, but it gives it greater utility at less cost.
He recognized the work of the authorities to reduce this crime, however, it still persists on highways such as the north arch that goes from Puebla to the Bajío area.
