Comedian Chris Rock had taken the stage to present the award for Best Documentary, unaware that he was about to star in the most viral moment, for worse, of the 94th Oscar ceremony, held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. (California). As can be seen in the video that accompanies this news, it began with an innocuous joke with Javier Bardem, although he made the mistake of referring to Penélope Cruz as the actor’s wife, and not as an actress who has a statuette and who was also among the nominees for Best Actress, for her role in Parallel Mothers.
Moments later the moment that darkened the night would come. Rock compared the style of actress and producer Jada Pinkett Smith, who was accompanying her husband Will Smith in the audience, to that of Demi Moore in Lieutenant O’Neil. The difference is that the character in the film shaved his hair for military reasons, and Pinkett Smith has done it to make alopecia visible, a taboo disease among women, in an Instagram post that she shared at the end of 2021.
It is not the first time that the actor directs his incisive humor towards her. He already did it at the 2016 Oscar ceremony, in response to requests he received from Hollywood members of the African-American community not to present the gala due to the absence of actors of that race among the nominees. In the video that opens the news, Rock denies that Pinkett is an actress: “Boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. No one has invited me.” In the video you can also see the reactions that the aggression has aroused among social networks, how the attendees realized that what they had just seen was not part of the script and how the comedian overcame the situation after receiving the slap.
