The United States Secretaries of State and Homeland Security, Antony Blinken and Alejandro Mayorkas, respectively, will travel to Panama next week to participate in a Ministerial Conference on Migration and Protection.
According to a statement from the State Department spokesman, Ned Price, released this Friday, Blinken and representatives of the governments of the region will discuss “collaboration for safe, orderly and humane migration throughout the hemisphere.”
The forum follows up on the commitments expressed at another ministerial meeting on migration held in Colombia in October 2021 and will be attended by leaders from 21 nations of the Western Hemisphere, the note indicates.
Price highlighted the importance of this meeting and stressed that “it represents an important step to develop a framework for managing and protecting migration in the Americas.”
Blinken will also meet in Panama with President Laurentino Cortizo Cohen, Foreign Minister Erika Mouynes, as well as multilateral development banks, financial institutions, international organizations and NGOs to discuss migration, corruption and other issues of importance to the United States and Panama, he said. the notice.
During the visit, the Secretary of State will promote the Ninth Summit of the Americas, scheduled for early June in Los Angeles, California, where the leaders of the hemisphere will expand their efforts to address the most important issues for the region, “in order to foster a sustainable, resilient and equitable future,” the note concluded.
