Indiana Fever teammates Sophie Cunningham and Lexie Hull recently took to social media with a lighthearted pitch for a swimwear endorsement, sparking a humorous public exchange with rookie sensation Caitlin Clark.
Before a game in Los Angeles, Cunningham and Hull posted a TikTok video of themselves by a pool, captioning it, “Convince us there’s a swimsuit brand that wants to partner with two Indiana Fever mermaids.” The post, which has since amassed over 1.5 million views, drew a witty response from Clark.
“Swimsuit brands plz comment ‘focus on basketball,’” Clark wrote in the comments section.
Cunningham playfully retorted in a since-deleted reply, “maybe a brand will make a full body wet suit for your pale a– too… We all win!”
The online banter is indicative of a strong camaraderie among the teammates, particularly the bond between Cunningham and Clark. Cunningham has been one of Clark’s most vocal supporters, both on and off the court. In one notable incident this season, Cunningham came to Clark’s defense after a hard foul, resulting in an on-court altercation and multiple ejections.
During an appearance on the “Show Me Something” podcast, Cunningham firmly established her position on Clark’s impact. “It literally p—es me off when people are like, ‘She’s not the face of the league,'” Cunningham said. “When people try to argue that she’s not the face of our league or that our league would be where we’re at without her, you’re dumb as s—.”
The seventh-year WNBA veteran also commented on the uniquely intense reception Clark has faced from opponents. Recalling her time with the Phoenix Mercury in 2024, Cunningham said, “I know the talks Phoenix had in their locker room of, like, ‘We’re going to show her what the W really is.’ Every rookie coming into the league, that’s how you’re going to treat them. But there’s just more for her… Now being on her team and seeing it, I’m like, ‘What are people doing?’ It’s just too much.”
This season, Cunningham is averaging 8.0 points per game and shooting an impressive 41.9% from three-point range through 25 contests.
