A storm system that prompted a brief tornado warning passed through the Greater Grand Forks area early Friday morning, delivering heavy rain and high winds.
The National Weather Service issued the tornado warning at 4:12 a.m. as the front moved in, with sirens sounding across the city at 4:20 a.m. The warning was lifted by 4:30 a.m.
While no tornado was confirmed in the area, WDAY meteorologist Lydia Blume noted during a live broadcast that as storms approach, “sometimes that leading edge gets some rotation.”
The line of storms was extensive, stretching across North Dakota from the Canadian to the South Dakotan border. Shortly before 5 a.m., a rain gauge on the south side of Grand Forks had measured just over half an inch of precipitation.
According to the National Weather Service, this may only be the first round of severe weather for the region. There is a chance of additional showers and storms later Friday, with a forecasted high temperature of around 81 degrees.
