NEW YORK — Carlos Correa delivered a go-ahead single off struggling reliever Devin Williams in the 10th inning, leading the Houston Astros to a 5-3 victory over the New York Yankees on Friday night.
Taylor Trammell followed with a two-run homer, also off Williams, to extend Houston’s lead to 5-2. The loss was the sixth in seven games for the Yankees, who dropped to 3-8 in extra-inning contests.
The Astros broke the 2-2 tie quickly in the 10th. With automatic runner Jose Altuve on second, Williams (3-5) threw his first pitch to the backstop, allowing Altuve to advance to third. Correa then lined a changeup into center field to score the go-ahead run. After two outs, Trammell drove a changeup into the right-field seats.
For Williams, the difficult outing continued a recent slump; he has allowed nine runs in his last five appearances and four home runs in his last eight.
Houston had taken an early lead when Altuve hit a two-run homer in the first inning off rookie starter Cam Schlittler. Astros starter Hunter Brown was dominant for much of his outing, retiring 14 consecutive batters at one point. However, New York rallied to tie the game in the sixth when Ben Rice hit an RBI double and Aaron Judge followed with a tying single, knocking Brown from the game.
Brown finished after allowing two runs and four hits in 5 1/3 innings. Schlittler gave up two runs and seven hits over five innings in his start for the Yankees.
Astros closer Josh Hader (6-2) earned the win after pitching a scoreless ninth. He returned for the 10th and allowed an RBI single to Anthony Volpe that cut the lead to 5-3. After walking pinch-hitter Giancarlo Stanton to bring the winning run to the plate, Hader induced a game-ending line drive from Trent Grisham to secure the win.
