Watch out for bleeding; Hereditary Factor X deficiency affects 1 in 12

It is estimated that one of every 12 people in Mexico has some bleeding disorder rare, such as hereditary coagulation Factor X deficiency, known as DHFX, which causes a number of important symptoms: 1) unusual or excessive bleeding or bruising, 2) heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) , 3) swollen and painful joints, 4) nosebleeds and gums.

The most frequent manifestation in the population that has hereditary deficiency of Factor X, are hemorrhages; these can be nasal, menorrhagia and excessive bleeding after surgical procedures, they can also be intra-articular with the consequent debilitating joint pain, and -in more severe cases- life-threatening hemorrhages such as intracranial and gastrointestinal bleeding, which can lead to disabilities and even death .

This was announced at a press conference where Dr. Aida Máshenka Moreno, head of hematology at the Federico Gómez Children’s Hospital in Mexico City, pointed out that “Factor X is the most important in the blood coagulation process; This is due to its preponderant role in facilitating the coagulation cascade, ensuring control of bleeding through the coagulation process. This factor is especially relevant, since it unites the intrinsic and extrinsic pathways of coagulation, so if there is a hereditary deficiency of Factor X, the bleeding tends to be more serious”.

This October 10 marks the International Day of Hereditary Coagulation Factor X Deficiencyand within this framework, the company BPL (Bio Products Laboratory), based in Hertfordshire, England, the only pharmaceutical laboratory that is investigating this disease, announced at a press conference the joint work with Mexican hematologists from different health institutions and associations doctors in an awareness campaign to increase the diagnosis of those who have this condition, in order to offer them comprehensive management in a timely manner and with effective and innovative therapies.

Dr. Luis Antonio Meillón García, hematologist and president of the Mexican Association for the Study of Hematology (AMEH), as well as Dr. Raúl Izaguirre Ávila, hematologist, head of the Hematology Service of the National Institute of Hematology, joined this commemoration. The goal, they said, is to generate more information and tools for the timely diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of this disease, and in this context, raising the voices of patients with hereditary factor x deficiency has never been more important.

“As we continue to learn more about factor X deficiency and its impact on families, communities and our health system, we have a need to generate more data for earlier diagnosis and better treatment solutions. That is why on this day we emphasize the inherent challenges of rare bleeding disorders, including DHFX,” observed Dr. Eric Wolford, Global Vice President of Medical Affairs at Bio Products Laboratory.

Leonardo Torres, general manager of BPL Mexico, was pleased with the interest shown by the medical community to join the effort to promote greater awareness of hereditary deficiency of Factor X, with whom, he said, they will work together to improve the lives of the patients.
