The Astros extinguish the first illusion of the Mariners in the ALDS

In best-of-five postseason series history, Game 1 winners have won the series 102 of 144 times (71%). In the Division Series with the current 2-2-1 format, teams that won Game 1 in their home stadiums advanced 34 of 47 times (72%).

Álvarez hit the first walk-off home run in playoff history by a team that was behind by several runs. He was the second walk-off home run in postseason history by a team to his last out. The other was Kirk Gibson’s game-ending home run off Dennis Eckersley in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series.

Yordan’s parents were in the stands. It was the first time he was seen playing in the postseason after arriving from the island of Cuba in August.

“I think it’s one of the most special moments I’ve had in my career, to have them there, and even just for the city of Houston. They know we’re a team that never gives up,” said Álvarez, who hit 37 home runs in the regular season.
