The three main stock indices of the US market closed the session on Friday with heavy losses. Wall Street backed off on expectations that the rate hike path of the Federal Reserve (Fed) could be more aggressive.
The index Dow Jones, made up of the shares of 30 industrial giants, fell 1.34% to 29,634.83 units. The S&P 500, of 500 components, fell 2.37% to 3,583.07 points. The Nasdaq of technology companies lost 3.08% to 10,321.39 units.
After the high inflation data published this week in the United States, weak reports from US banks in the third quarter revived the fear of a recession caused by the tightening of monetary policy.
Also, after opening in the green, indices reversed course as data from the University of Michigan showed that consumer confidence improved in October, fueling views that inflation will remain high.
For the week, the Nasdaq and S&P 500 indices posted declines of 3.11% and 1.55%, in part due to sharp declines in big tech, sensitive to rate hikes. The Dow Jones index accumulated a gain of 1.18 percent.
