Cempasúchil producers in Puebla foresee spillage of 60 million pesos for Day of the Dead celebrations

Puebla, Pue. After two years of the collapse of sales of up to 70% due to the covid-19 pandemicthe flower growers of cempasuchil in the entity they foresee a 100% recovery of the market and reach an economic benefit of 60 million pesos for the Day of the Dead season.

Eduardo Robelo Estrada, president of the Ornamental Product System of the Valley of Atlixcosaid that the crops of cempasuchil they are ready to invade the local market with 80% and the rest will be placed in hotels and stores in the south-southeast of the country.

However, he said that the costs will rise between 10 and 15%, in the case of the yellow flower the bouquet would be sold between 120 and 130 pesos; while the bunch of velvet between 70 and 80 pesos.

He said that the producers of flowers of cempasúchil y velvet they obtained 10,000 and 50,000 tons, respectively, 20% more than in 2021, while in 2020 a large part of the harvest was lost, because there were low sales due to the pandemic and that the pantheons were closed.

He assured that as it is a seasonal plant, its commercialization is assured, since Puebla is the first place in flower production, generating 80% of this species at the national level.

Distribution is in supply centers and markets in the states of Hidalgo, Guerrero, Veracruz, Tlaxcala, Tabasco, Chiapas, Guanajuato and Mexico City, among others.

Other entities that stand out in terms of production are the State of Mexico with 10%, Oaxaca with 5.2%, Guerrero with 3.7% and Hidalgo with 2.6%, while the rest of the states together add up to 9.2 percent.

Robelo Estrada pointed out that the commercialization of these seasonal flowers generates 6,000 direct and indirect jobs.

He added that five years ago they began selling potted flowers, which they grow in nurseries, generating between 100,000 and 120,000 units, at a cost of eight to thirteen pesos per unit.
