Sugar workers achieve 6% direct wage increases

Although the inflation and the national economic situation were determining factors for the Union of Workers of the Sugar and Similar Industries of the Mexican Republic to accept a direct salary increase of 6%, two percentage points below its original demand; It ranks as one of the “highest” negotiations of unions such as Social Security, Telephone Workers and Petroleum.

At a press conference, Lorenzo Pale MendozaGeneral Secretary of the Union, explained that it was a good agreement that they reached with the industrialists of the National Sugar Chamberbecause with the increase in benefits it is possible for a worker in the industry to obtain a better income, since it doubles.

This agreement includes the 32,000 workers who are affiliated to the Union of Workers of the Sugar Industry, which are distributed in 41 mills in 16 states of the Mexican Republic.

Pale Mendoza explained that two important things were achieved in the negotiations, one of them has to do with the creation of a fund of 47 million pesos that will be used to renovate housing for workers, which is valid for four years. .

On the other hand, to prevent salaries from losing purchasing power, a clause was included in which it was established that a study will be carried out to evaluate the tabulator and eliminate positions that no longer exist, in addition to reclassifying profiles lagging behind in perceptions.

The union leader, who has been in office for a year, explained that the new housing fund had ended in 2014, and it is in this contractual review that they managed to include it again, “it is a new concept of social work that begins a new stage in where there will be absolute transparency and a supervisor will be appointed”, he explained.

Likewise, he said that the union organization is transforming itself and complying with the new measures of the labor reform, especially with regard to including the free, secret and direct vote to elect the general secretary, as well as the inclusion of the parity of gender in the different sections that make up the organization.

In that sense, Pale Mendoza added that next November 27 the National Executive Committee will be elected and for the first time it will be through personal, free, direct and secret vote. He announced that he will contest the elections for the period from March 2023 to February 2029. “We are going to respect the vote of the workers,” he emphasized.

In compliance with the labor reform, the leader of the sugar producers affirmed that they will make transparent the use of the union’s resources and will deliver cash cuts every six months to the labor authority.

He mentioned that despite the health crisis and global problems, sugar production in the country has been maintained, with 6 to 6.5 million tons in the last harvest.

Therefore, the country is self-sufficient in this product, since 4 million 300 thousand tons are consumed per year. The Sugar Union is made up of 41 sections and has a presence in 16 states of the country.
