Banks manage a fund of 21,300 million pesos in calls “inactive accounts”bank accounts whose owners have not carried out operations with them in six years.
The banks have the obligation to concentrate the money from these accounts in a concentrator fund after 3 years without movements. That fund earns interest. If in 3 more years the holders of these inactive accounts have not reported to the banks or made a move, the money goes to the Public Charity.
A legislative reform wants to make changes to that rule and allocate resources to public security tasks —read, the National Guardcontrolled by the Mexican Army— instead of the Public Charity, a decentralized body of the Federal Government’s Ministry of Health.
The largest amount of inactive accounts, abandoned accounts or forgotten accounts – whatever you want to call them – is managed by Banamexwith 6,477 million pesos.
