Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman will present his “Symphonic Blues Experience” in Kansas City this September, performing alongside the Kansas City Symphony.
The show features Freeman narrating the history of the blues, tracing its origins to the Mississippi Delta where he has deep personal ties. He will be joined on stage by musicians from the Ground Zero Blues Club in Mississippi, a venue he co-owns.
In a recent interview, Freeman shared his excitement for his first-ever visit to the city. Upon learning of its rich jazz heritage, he expressed his admiration for Kansas City native and music legend Charlie Parker.
“Charlie Parker was one of my favorite musicians, and I could hum along with him on his bebop,” Freeman recalled. He specifically cited a recording of Parker backing the Norman Luboff Choir on “In The Still of the Night.”
“Him playing along with them, it was just awesome,” Freeman said.
“Morgan Freeman’s Symphonic Blues Experience” will be held on September 2-3 at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.
