West Ham United are maintaining their interest in Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey, though the player is currently keeping his options open regarding his long-term future.
Aston Villa are understood to be willing to listen to offers for the 24-year-old, with a valuation of around £40 million. While Ramsey is well-regarded by manager Unai Emery, his status as a homegrown academy graduate means any transfer fee would count as pure profit in the club’s accounts, a significant factor amid the Premier League’s financial regulations.
Although West Ham have yet to submit a formal offer, manager Graham Potter has identified Ramsey as an ideal player to strengthen his midfield. However, the midfielder has reportedly not yet been convinced by the prospect of a move to the London club. Nottingham Forest also showed interest earlier in the transfer window.
Ramsey’s decision may hinge on his involvement at the start of the season. If granted regular playing time, he is likely to remain at Villa Park and could sign an extension to his contract, which expires in two years. Conversely, a reduced role could prompt the former England Under-21 international to seek a move from his boyhood club.
The £40 million price tag may prove a stumbling block for West Ham, who are also exploring other midfield targets. The club holds an interest in Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott and previously considered Ramsey’s former teammate Douglas Luiz, though the latter’s wage demands at Juventus are considered prohibitive.
While the emergence of youngster Freddie Potts in pre-season has provided another midfield option, West Ham are still believed to be in the market for at least one more signing in that position before the window closes.
