Bodycam footage released Tuesday captures the moment Uvalde County sheriff’s deputies discovered the Robb Elementary School shooter’s grandmother, Celia “Sally” Gonzales, suffering from a gunshot wound to her face.
Authorities have confirmed that before the gunman killed 19 children and two teachers, he first shot Gonzales at her home. The newly released video shows deputies arriving to find her bleeding from the face and other parts of her body.
In the footage, an officer asks Gonzales, “Who did this to you?” and also inquires about her grandson. As deputies request emergency medical services, she exits the home while holding a towel to her injury. An officer guides her to the front of the house, urging her to keep pressure on the wound. “I don’t know where he’s at,” Gonzales can be heard saying.
The situation escalates when another deputy on scene states, “I think we got an officer down as well now,” prompting the officer wearing the bodycam to immediately leave for Robb Elementary.
Gonzales survived the attack. Her cousin, Jason Ybarra, later told the New York Post that the bullet entered her jaw, shattering her teeth, and would have been fatal if its trajectory had been slightly different. Gonzales was released from the hospital just over a month after the massacre.
