The Borderlands franchise has long been defined by its immense arsenal of firearms, and the upcoming Borderlands 4 is set to elevate this signature feature to an unprecedented scale. In a feature with Epic Games, Art Director May revealed that the game will contain over 30 billion possible gun combinations for players to discover.
May explained that this staggering number is made possible by a sophisticated procedural generation system. The system algorithmically combines a wide array of distinct components—such as bodies, barrels, and attachments—to create functionally unique weapons. This means every time a player opens a loot chest, they have a chance of finding something truly one-of-a-kind.
The weapon variety is further deepened by the return of numerous manufacturers, each with its own specialized traits. The lineup includes Daedalus, Jakobs, Order, Ripper, Vlador, Torgue, Maliwan, and Tediore, who produce a full range of weapon types like pistols, assault rifles, shotguns, sniper rifles, and SMGs. With additional layers of customization from attachments and firing modes, the system allows for a near-limitless number of loadouts, making it possible for a player to wield a weapon combination no one else has ever found.
