The New York Yankees are clinging to the final American League Wild Card spot, holding a slim half-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians after a recent series loss to the Houston Astros. Mired in a 2-7 slump since the trade deadline, the team’s postseason aspirations are in jeopardy. While a collective effort is needed to reverse their fortunes, the Yankees’ success hinges overwhelmingly on captain Aaron Judge returning to his MVP-caliber form.
Judge had a historic start to the season and still leads baseball in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, and OPS. However, his performance since returning from a right flexor strain has been modest. In five games back as the designated hitter, Judge is 3-for-15 with one extra-base hit. The Yankees won just two of those contests, reinforcing a familiar pattern: the team’s success is directly tied to Judge’s dominance, as evidenced by their playoff absence during his 2023 injury.
While other players have underperformed, including shortstop Anthony Volpe, no one carries the same weight as Judge. The team’s most successful seasons in the Aaron Boone era—featuring ALCS appearances in 2017, 2019, and 2022—all occurred with a healthy and productive Judge in the lineup.
The Yankees’ dependency on their star has been starkly illustrated since mid-June. After sweeping the Royals on June 12 to take a 4.5-game lead in the AL East, the team has posted a 20-31 record, the worst in the American League during that span. Even with Judge hitting a respectable .238 with a .911 OPS and 12 home runs in that stretch, it hasn’t been enough to stave off the team’s collapse. The current roster appears to require an elite performance from him simply to stay competitive.
An upcoming series against the Minnesota Twins offers a critical opportunity for a turnaround. Judge has historically thrived against Minnesota, boasting a 1.199 OPS with 11 home runs in 40 career regular-season games.
Although Judge’s career postseason OPS of .768 has been a subject of debate, the immediate challenge is securing a playoff berth. For the Yankees to make a meaningful run in the season’s final weeks, they will need their captain to get blisteringly hot and carry the team into October.
