The United States will extend to June 2024 the exemption from deportation for salvadoran immigrants and from five other nations enrolled in a program known as Temporary Protected Status (TPS), El Salvador’s ambassador to the United States, Milena Mayorga, said Thursday.
The other countries included in the plan are Haiti, Nicaragua, Sudan, Honduras and Nepal.
The formal announcement would be made in the middle of next week.
“According to the announcement, the USCIS (Citizenship and Immigration Services of the United States), would be extending the validity of the work permits of the Salvadoran beneficiaries for another 18 months, that is, until June 30, 2024,” Mayorga wrote on his Twitter account.
According to official figures, around 2.5 million Salvadorans reside and work in the United Statesof which 180,000 are covered by the benefit of the Temporary Protected Status, whose expiration date is December 31.
