Defending champion and No. 2 seed Coco Gauff advanced to her second Cincinnati Open quarterfinal, defeating Lucia Bronzetti 6-2, 6-4 in a commanding performance that lasted one hour and 19 minutes.
Despite a four-day competitive layoff after receiving a third-round walkover from Dayana Yastremska, Gauff showed little sign of rust. The victory propels her into her first quarterfinal since winning her second major title at Roland Garros and improves her head-to-head record against Bronzetti to 2-0. It also marks her fifth quarterfinal appearance at a WTA 1000 or Grand Slam event in 2024.
“For the most part I played aggressive,” Gauff said after the match. “Maybe got a little passive in some of those games. But it’s tough — the balls are super light and they fly, and she wasn’t giving me much pace, so I was just trying to play controlled but also aggressive.”
Gauff now awaits the winner of the match between No. 7 seed Jasmine Paolini and Barbora Krejcikova, a contest that serves as a rematch of the 2024 Wimbledon final.
