The intimidatingly lengthy Florida pine snake is almost never encountered in the wild, but a sighting happened in Ocala Countrywide Forest — with a grisly twist.
A pine snake was seen Oct. 26 shoving a different animal down its throat, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Exploration Institute. The forest is about 70 miles north of Orlando.
“An FWC … biologist was surveying a site in the Ocala Countrywide Forest when she arrived to a highway intersection and spotted anything in the center of the road,” the institute wrote in a Nov. 19 Fb put up.
“As the biologists approached the critter, they recognized that it was unusual, nonvenomous Florida pine snake swallowing a younger eastern cottontail.”
The nonvenomous snake remained in the highway right up until it was completed taking in, then slithered away, the institute stories.

“The snout is pointed and has a large scale on the nose, and a pronounced ridge above the eyes can make pine snakes appear ‘mean’,” FWC stories. “This species normally hisses pretty loudly when disturbed.”
