On November 25 of each year, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls is commemorated, as a tribute to all those who have fought to conquer human and social rights and for those who continue to do so every day.
This day is also a reminder about how here and in China the road to live in fair and equal societies is still long. Although today, in most countries of the world, we can vote, get divorced, study and work, we still face multiple forms of violence.
Gender-based violence can take various forms, from workplace violence, economic violence, educational violence, physical violence, psychological violence or sexual violence.
All are reproduced and perpetuated through structures that urgently need to be transformed, so that all girls and women can have access to a life of freedom, autonomy, rights and equal opportunities.
Particularly in Mexico, 7 out of 10 women have experienced at least one type of violence throughout their lives. Psychological being the most prevalent, because it directly impacts the performance of women in all areas of their lives.
For its part, it is observed that still 3 out of 10 (27%) of women over 15 years of age have experienced economic or patrimonial violence. And one of the areas in which this type of violence prevails most strongly is the world of work. Here we present some graphs that reflect how the job market is still not equal:
Women hold the majority of unpaid positions and a disproportionate minority of those who run businesses that employ others.
Although the vast majority of workers, both men and women, occupy precarious positions in terms of wages, working hours and benefits, women are even more disadvantaged.
In the Mexican labor market there are 2.5 million workers who do not receive income for their work in any scheme, not even in exchange for other perceptions such as tips or commissions. And of this total of 60% are women, the remaining 40% are men.
Another indicator in red is that of employers, 2.9 million people employ others, but only 20% are women.
The labor market not only generates fewer opportunities for women, but pays disproportionately: women earn less in almost all economic sectors.
Artisans are the workers who face the most pronounced salary gap, for the same work they receive barely half of what their male peers do. Women directors, officials and team leaders receive, on average, 14 pesos less than men in the same positions.
The labor market punishes women with fewer job opportunities, barriers to accessing better positions or starting businesses, and paying less in almost all types of employment. But, in addition, work spaces are not a safe place for women either, emotional, physical and sexual violence also interferes with their workdays.
4 out of 10 women have experienced psychological violence perpetrated by their work colleagues and 3 out of 10 have experienced physical or sexual assault. Co-workers and bosses are the main aggressors in the workplace. Even the clients, who are foreign to the labor units that employ them, exercise some type of violence.
That women can work in spaces free of violence is essential so that they can develop not only professionally, but also in their personal lives.
The road to eradicate violence against women and girls is still long, but activism, the work of civil society, journalism with a gender perspective, and the integration of women in decision-making in public and private spheres have been key. in the progress we have made so far.
