Between hugs, photographs, harangues, and jeering, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador marched yesterday with the sole purpose of extolling what he called “the four years of the transformation of Mexico.”
Very much in the style of a political campaign, the Mexican president led, for nearly six hours, a massive march along the Paseo de la Reforma, destined for the Zócalo of Mexico City, an act that, according to the capital authorities, brought together 1 million 200,000 people.
The march, which began shortly after 9:15 am at the Ángel de Independencia, was characterized by being a slow journey, without any security protocol for the president and by the presence of large crowds that, without restrictions, sought to approach the president to greet him, hug him or take a photo.
It was thus that the lack of organization caused the president’s walk to become slow and for some moments, chaotic.
“We all have to take care of the president,” sweaty and desperate members of López Obrador’s assistant shouted to the supporters who, between shouts and shoves, sought to see him.
While, in an attempt to expedite his journey, the presidential team suggested that he get into a white car to get him out of the contingent and take him quickly to the Zócalo, to which the Mexican president refused and continued his walk for a couple of of hours more
Achievements and GDP
Around 3:00 p.m., President López Obrador managed to go up to the Zócalo pavilion to start his speech.
“Love is paid with love,” launched the president before thousands of supporters of the so-called “People’s March.”
Among his achievements, the president highlighted the increases in the minimum wage, going from 88 pesos to 172 pesos; the creation of one million 264, 931 new jobs, the application of 228 million vaccines against Covid-19 and the non-contracting of debt.
Every time there was a crisis: debt, contracting debt to bail out those at the top (…) To hell with all that! All the support is from the bottom up, ”she stressed.
López Obrador added that his government has shown that, in terms of economic policy, the formula of banishing corruption and ending luxuries and waste in government works.
Regarding growth, the Executive stated that a GDP increase of 3.5% is expected in 2022 and similar figures for 2023 and 2024.
Regarding security, the president assured that he is “absolutely convinced that peace is the fruit of justice and that the key is attention to young people, the most vulnerable population and the marginalized.”
This after arguing that with this strategy his government is reducing violence.
Finally, López Obrador called on his supporters to continue “making history, let’s continue promoting the change of mentality, the revolution of consciences. Let us make Mexican humanism a reality and glory”.
“We are not carried, we are supportive”
Proud of the president’s performance, thousands of people said they were happy to accompany López Obrador in his mobilization.
Mrs. Maria del Pilar Chávez did not hesitate to express her support for the president because for her “our country already needed a change and history will tell us if it was good or bad, but we do need a change and we are experiencing it.”
And it is that the 71-year-old woman maintained that after Mexico went through “very bad governments, it seems that there is an awakening, I hope that history marks it that way, I think it is fine, I believe in the project, in the president and I hope so”.
With the same feeling, Andrea Medina, a 25-year-old girl from the State of Mexico, expressed that she had seen a change since the president took power, “perhaps people say that there are no changes, because obviously it is It is very difficult to remove all the garbage that lasted for years, but we have faith”.
They organize transfers from at least eight entities
Morena leaders and legislators from at least eight states in the country organized transfers of people to Mexico City with the aim of supporting the march called by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Last week leaders of the party founded by López Obrador de Tabasco; Aguascalientes; Campeche; Nayarit; Guerrero and Oaxaca, as well as legislators from Colima and Chihuahua announced the rental of trucks for the transfer of thousands of people to yesterday’s demonstration for the four years of the inauguration as president of AMLO.
All of them, it is worth mentioning, rejected the use of public resources for the transfer of people, stating that it was the supporters themselves who would pay the costs of transporting them to Mexico City.
On the other hand, in Mexico City, workers from cultural centers told El Economista, anonymously, that the coordinators told them that roll call would be taken and photographic evidence would be taken of those who did attend yesterday’s march.
In turn, they reported that WhatsApp chats were created so that the coordinators themselves could upload the photographic evidence. (With information from Hector Molina)
