The Zero Hunger initiative seeks to improve nutritional conditions, companies join the change in Mexico

within the sustainable development goals of the United Nations Organization (UN) is the “Zero Hunger” initiative, which aims to improve and act quickly to provide food and humanitarian aid to regions that suffer from precarious food conditions. The goal is the year 2030, since by this date it is estimated that the people affected by hunger will exceed the 840 million.

In the case of Mexico, CONEVAL estimated that in 2020 around 28.6 million Mexican men and women suffered from problems regarding nutritional conditionsa situation that worsened as a result of the pandemic.

With the foregoing, during the first year of the “Zero Hunger” Working Group in Mexico, various actions through 5 axes: Food Self-Sufficiency and Food Production, Food Loss and Waste Reduction, Food Education and Nutrition, Food Access and Availability Systems and, finally, Communication.

Mexican and foreign companies have joined these initiatives. “It is the first anniversary of the start of the actions of this Working Group to eradicate hunger in the country, which demonstrates the sum of wills of the various participants of the private initiative and civil society”, said Federico González Celaya, president of the Network of Food Banks of Mexico (Red BAMX), in this regard.

Grupo Bimbo, Soriana and even OXXO stores are some of the companies that have worked to eradicate the food crisis and contributed to the 2030 Agenda in Mexico.

Baby group

Recently, Bimbo México delivered more than 3.7 million slices of Bimbo White Bread to the BAMX Network. This donation was possible thanks to the more than 23,000 participants who met in person in the four host cities of Mexico for the Bimbo Global Race 2022.

For each person registered, the bakery promised to donate 20 slices of bread, which allowed this donation to be made in Mexico and thus fulfill its commitment to give bread to those who need it most, contributing to the fight towards “Zero Hunger” and in which today add more than 6.8 million slices of bread to food banks donated in this edition.

Soriana

Together with Kellogg’s, the Soriana supermarket chain joined efforts to alleviate hunger and food insecurity in Mexico. Both corporations delivered 2 million servings of food to the BAMX Network, which will benefit 500,000 families.

The commitment between the institutions will be sustained during this year 2022 and contemplates different initiatives in favor of the fight against food insecurity in the country.

OXXO

Since 2010, the OXXO commercial chain has been working with the BAMX Network, which contributes and provides support for the collection of surplus and undamaged products from OXXO stores. Until August 2022, more than 38 million pesos, equivalent to 613 tons of food, were donated.

Once a week, the association visits the stores, channels the surplus to the food banks that have them, and distributes or delivers them to the population that needs it most.

Finally, one of the objectives of the Working Group is also to ensure that the concept of “Zero Hunger” becomes a social movement that leads to concrete actions, so they will continue working with civil society, business organizations, and the government to eliminate hunger in Mexico, as a result of a conscious and concerted action so that the result is sustainable in the long term.
