Alfa Romeo Giulia Extreme: Italian power

When the Italian brand launched this high-performance sedan in 2016, the press and the general public praised the always daring and attractive design that Alfa gives to its models. But once the reports and driving tests began to circulate, the specialized media recognized its set-up.

On this occasion I had the opportunity to test the latest version that Alfa Romeo bring to Mexico This is the Giulia Estrema, which with significant exterior changes and a high-performance engine, completes, together with the Stelvio and the recently presented Tonale, the offer for 2023.

To clearly differentiate itself from the more radical version, called QV, Estrema has changes on the outside that, contrary to what one might think, increase its level of sportiness.

Honestly, what I liked the most about his image were the 19” wheels whose design he calls 5 Hole; They are beautiful but care must be taken to avoid damaging them when parking as they are flush with the tyre, which is also worth noting that since it has a wide bed and a low profile (225/40), it forces you to avoid any anomaly on the pavement; They are also Run Flat.

The bodywork has different elements made of carbon fiber such as the mirror covers, the logos or the bezel that accompanies the grille or Trilobe as it is officially called. Of the rest there are no major changes, it continues to look impressive with the track widths that force the fenders to look muscular. The calipers are finished in glossy black with the brand’s signature in white.

As for lighting, the bi-xenon system with a magnifying glass for the main ones, led for daytime driving and led for the rear. Although the main ones do not have LEDs, the reality is that in practice they offer a wide, clear and powerful spectrum that is especially appreciated when driving on the road.

The interior has a sublime culmination, from the details such as the paddle shifters behind the wheel made of aluminum, the carbon fiber inserts in the center console, on the steering wheel, on the door covers and along the dashboard; all this combines with the red stitching and the matte aluminum tone of the rest of the controls.

As for the entertainment system, although the screen is in color, it seems small to me (8.8”), considering the segment but even more so because of the type of customer it is aimed at. Have Apple CarPlay y Android Auto wireless, Harman Kardon audio system with 14 speakers and wireless charger. The racing cut seats have electrical adjustments, to which is added the unique touch of the leather that covers them.

In the rear seats, the space is ideal for two adults, in addition to the fact that the legroom is sufficient for people close to 1.80 meters tall, although the fall from the roof could be somewhat uncomfortable.

The first thing that comes to mind is what this version could do if put up against the QV with its twin-turbo V6. The reality is that the 2-liter turbo engine with its 280 horsepower and 306 lb-ft of torque is more than enough for driving at a good pace. But to this must be added an extraordinary 51/49 weight distribution, the aluminum manufacturing of different elements of the bodywork as well as the suspension, the Chassis Domain Control system as well as the Alfa Active Suspension that varies the stiffness of the shock absorbers. making driving more pleasant in the city or more firm to drive at higher speeds on highways.

This version is equipped with a Mechanical Limited Slip Differential that allows full throttle before exiting a corner while maintaining control and applying maximum rimpull to the rear axle.

This version does not have to resort to the bravura of the QV. Its balance is remarkable, its ride quality at the level of the best in the segment and with features that are admirable for a 4-cylinder. There are details to mention such as the size and resolution of the central screen or the fact of doing without a spare tire, although it is understood considering that the manufacturer seeks the greatest possible weight reduction and the best use of the available space.
