Guatemala’s main airport was reopened this Sunday after remaining preventively closed for about three hours due to the ashes thrown by the Fuego volcano, erupting since Saturday night, reported Civil Aeronautics.
The La Aurora international airport in the Guatemalan capital resumed operations around noon (18:00 GMT) when ash from the volcano, 35 km away, dispersed near the runway, said the director of Civil Aeronautics Francis Argueta.
“We have determined to resume operations [en La Aurora] derived from the fact that there has been a wind from the north to the south” that moved the ash away, said Argueta in a video posted on social networks.
The closure had forced the diversion of two flights that were supposed to land in La Aurora in the morning, one from Miami and the other from Santo Domingo, and delayed the takeoff of other planes. In addition, a road near the volcano remains closed preventively.
