Eight out of 10 companies in Latin America recognize the importance of sustainable practices: IDB

About eight out of ten companies from Latin America and the Caribbean consider that their clients would value the application of practices aligned with the environment, which represents a greater number compared to 2021, when they did not reach 70%, according to the survey ‘Seeking to understand the new exporter DNA’, carried out on Inter-American Development Bank (BID).

“Exporting companies in the region are interested in incorporating green practices to boost their export projection, which opens up new opportunities for the expansion and improvement of trade and for a more sustainable integration in Latin America and the Caribbean,” said the manager of the Integration and Trade sector of the IDB, Fabrizio Operatti.

By sectors, it is observed that the primary sector has a greater intention to adapt its production through sustainability practices. 84% of the companies in this sector responded favorably, while the figure for the secondary and tertiary sectors was 74% and 72%, respectively.

Lack of adaptation and economic problems

While 75% of the companies in the region consider that they could adapt to practices more closely linked to the environment, 6% still resist who believe that they could not do so and 9% who do not see it as necessary.

This last percentage has fallen by two points compared to the previous year, when 11% of companies did not value this type of practice.

Among the main obstacles, companies focus on investment and financing (56%) and technical capabilities (30%).

Regarding the first question, more than seven out of ten companies would increase investment or would remain stable in the next three years, according to the IDB survey.
