Everyone leaves! It is a cry embodied in the banners of the protests in Peru, which indicates that the relationship between citizenship and politics is in a “post mortem” state, in which some flies are already hanging around.
The castle in the air collapsed, but this is only the tip of the iceberg. Since 2018, the Andean country has had six presidents, of which only two have been elected. At the same time, the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) records that 60.6% of the population maintains corruption as their main concern.
In addition to the fact that in the survey carried out by Proética, it can be seen that Congress is perceived as the most corrupt institution with 76%, followed by the Judiciary with 47%, and political parties with 31 percent. To the latter, must be added the accusations of corruption around Castillo, and the result gives us a: Let them all go!
Betrayal can hardly be hidden and today the cries of Peruvians respond to a mixture of pain and disappointment.
Peru has become a failed state. Because it failed them. Personal interests overthrew national interests, and today the latter is reflected in the data provided by the National Household Survey (ENAHO), which shows that 41.7% of Peruvians are multidimensionally poor.
Hence, there is a “they” and an “us”. Peru has many faces that need to unify before they can focus on a national project, and this echoes today more than ever in the region.
That is why many are adapting the narrative of Peru to their circumstances. Thus defending democracy “in his own way.” In a sense where Mexico is no exception.
What happens there matters because it impacts here. The worst foreign policy is the internal one, and this tells us about its design and who consumes it. In a context where the cough of the uncertain times of the pandemic has created a world mirage that allows everyone to see what they want to see.
We are in a global morning and this is the product of the memory of the future that came with the Covid-19. To which is also added what is happening between Russia and Ukraine.
Because what the various interpretations that exist with its motif do is remind us that in life there are no absolute truths, and that everything depends on the glass through which you look. That is why in Peru, what some want is for Pedro Castillo to leave. While others, what they want is for Congress to leave.
However, in the end everything is the same because the damage is done. Both failed and this has caused social unrest to hit the mark and grow. Leaving a balance of an overthrown president, 4 days of protests, 5 dead, 20 injured and a proposal for early general elections for April 2024. Two years ahead of schedule.
Will this be enough to calm down the Peruvians?
Much more could be needed.
