Agricultural producers in Querétaro prepare strategies for the impact of drought

Queretaro, Qro. Faced with the persistent drought that affects the state, agricultural producers prepare strategies to counteract its impact, particularly in the semi-desert region, one of the areas most affected by these climatic conditions.

The president of the Querétaro Regional Livestock Union (UGRQ), Alejandro Ugalde Tinocoexplained that although the state water bodies they are at approximately 45% of their filling capacity, there are dams that are empty, therefore, the local associations of the state and the UGRQ will have pipes to carry water to the regions that most require it.

“You have to understand that there are already dams that are completely empty, what we are doing is that we have some pipes with the associations (local cattle ranchers), plus those of the cattle union, what we are going to do is that we are going to be hauling this vital liquid with all the producers who are going to have an immediate need to bring them the water”, he pointed out.

The semi-desert region It is one of the areas of the state that will most require the supply of water through pipes, as it is the region that is traditionally most affected by drought.

However, the president of the UGRQ specified that there are other regions that atypically will also require this strategy, including the municipalities of Sierra Gorda (in Arroyo Seco and Landa de Matamoros) and also in the south of the state (in Amealco de Bonfil). .

“Historically we have had more problems with the semi-desert, which is where we are going to attack the most (the problem), but we are also seeing in municipalities where we had it very difficult, as it was in Arroyo Seco, but also a part of Jalpan, there in Tancoyol , and we are going to correct it as quickly as possible, also in Landa de Matamoros; and, what ever, in the part here of Amealco, we began to see that the bordos were not filled and we are going to have to correct that water problem as well, ”he added.

Similarly, he stressed that the drought has reduced the production in the statedue to the fact that rainfed producers did not sow due to the scarce rains, a situation that will result in a forage deficit.

This problem, he added, has already been discussed with the state government, so they trust that strategies will be generated together with the Ministry of Agricultural Development (sit), to launch programs related to the supply of fodder.

“The reality is that it has hit us, the drought has greatly reduced production in the state, mainly all the people who planted in the rain and well, we are going to have a small gap due to the shortage of fodder, we already know it. we are working, we discussed it with the governor (Maurice Kuri Gonzalez), we will see the immediate programs for the beginning of the year, to be able to correct this lack of fodder that we are going to have in the state”, he explained.

Until November 30, 85.5% of the state’s territory was in abnormally dry (26.8%), moderately dry (34.2%) and severely dry (24.5%) conditions, therefore, only 14.5% was unaffected, of agreement with the National Water Commission (With water).
