By majority vote, the United Commissions for Citizen Security and National Defense of the Chamber of Deputies endorsed the presidential initiative that issues the Law for the Protection of the Mexican Airspace, which seeks to grant the secretariats of National Defense, and Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation, airspace management.
As stated in the initiative sent by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to San Lázaro, this project will make it possible to take advantage of the civil and military resources of the Armed Forces to monitor airspace, as well as improve the ordering of air traffic of goods and people and will avoid acts that endanger the integrity of people and infrastructure, as well as property through the establishment of prevention and effective response measures.
Likewise, the Mexican president argued that this law seeks to inhibit acts of corruption that threaten air safety and encourage drug trafficking by air.
All of the above, after creating specialized mechanisms and institutions, such as the Mexican Air Space Surveillance and Protection System, “whose purpose is to coordinate the agencies and entities of the Federal Public Administration that comprise it to inhibit or counteract illegal air operations and those that threaten national security.
In addition, it is planned to create the National Airspace Surveillance Council as the body responsible for coordinating actions that preserve the security and sovereignty of the airspace.
Said council will be chaired by the President of the Republic and the heads of Foreign Relations, National Defense, Navy, Security and Citizen Protection will be part of it; and Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation.
In the arguments of the 26-article initiative, it is stated that it is proposed to take advantage of the strategic capacity of the Sedena, “which in times of peace like the ones we are living in” can channel human, material and technological resources from the Mexican Air Force to “dissuade threats that violate national security in Mexican airspace.”
