Ebrard confirms that Mexico granted asylum to the family of former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo

The Mexican government granted political asylum to the family of the former Peruvian president Pedro Castillo at the country’s embassy in Lima, reported this Tuesday morning the Mexican foreign minister, Marcelo Ebrard.

Castillo, a former left-wing ruler who took office last summer, is in custody in the Peruvian capital after being ousted by Congress after trying to illegally dissolve it and reorganize the judiciary.

The former president had sought asylum in the Mexico’s embassy in Lima shortly after announcing that he would close parliament, but was detained by police and is currently serving 18 months in pretrial detention while being investigated for “rebellion and conspiracy.”

“The asylum has already been granted because they are in Mexican territory, they are in our embassy (…) it is an independent and sovereign decision of Mexico,” said the secretary of Foreign Relations, Marcelo Ebrard.

Ebrard did not specify how many people from Castillo’s environment were received at the diplomatic legation. The former ruler has two minor children and has also lived in his family with one of his sisters-in-law, whom he considers “his daughter”.

The government of Mexico has supported Castillo even since before the political crisis. In response, the new Peruvian president, In Boluartecalled his ambassador in the country for consultations, as he also did with other ambassadors in various nations who have criticized the Peruvian situation.

Mexico has a long tradition of granting asylum to various politicians and personalities, among the best known are the Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky and the Spanish filmmaker Luis Bunuel; and, more recently, the former Bolivian president was granted asylum Evo Morales.
