Industry will maintain 6 million tons in the production of sugar; they will seek impetus together with workers

The forecasts for the next harvest, corresponding to the 2022-2023 cycle, are estimated at 6 million tons of sugar, which allows maintaining the work material, but above all, seeking a better boost in the industry, said the general secretary of the organization, Lorenzo Pale Mendoza.

He highlighted that the report of the National Committee for the Sustainable Development of Sugar Cane was recently published (conadesuca) in which it is highlighted that in the last 10 years the industrialized harvested area has increased by 20,000 hectares; and a recovery of field yield of 3.4 tons per hectare is observed with respect to the previous harvest.

In this sense, Pale Mendoza highlighted that “this industry is very important due to the number of jobs it generates, both direct and indirect, and it is the only product in which industrialists provide social security benefits to workers and for this reason very important”.

The duration of the 2021/2022 harvest was 263 days, equivalent to 8 months and 3 weeks, beginning on November 3, 2021 with the Compañía La Fe (Pujiltic) mill and ending on July 24, 2022 with San Rafael de Pucté. . 799,774 hectares were industrialized, with a milling of 54,680,830 tons of raw cane to obtain a physical sugar production of 6 million 185,050 tons.

The union leader explained that the harvest has begun, and prior to that they agreed with the more than 40 sugar mills on a salary increase, which was 6% and an average of 4% to 5% in benefits that go directly to the worker.

Salary adjustments to avoid overlaps

He stressed that to avoid losing purchasing power, “within this agreement a clause was drafted, where, indeed, due to the situation that you know of wage increases to the minimum wage, there have been many overlaps due to the different categories and jobs that are carried out in a mill; then, it agreed to integrate a commission made up of 3 industry representatives, 3 representatives of the National Executive Committee to carry out a study together with the industry representatives to review these overlaps and give the necessary increases”.

In the same way, he stressed that in the new union management, which begins next year 2023, he said that automation is an important challenge, so constant and permanent updating will be necessary to avoid unemployment.

Sugar mills are modernizing and the workforce is moving, and one of the challenges is training. We need to train workers to deal with this situation, ”he considered.

On the other hand, he announced that at the beginning of 2023 the legitimization of the collective labor contract will be carried out in the Bacardí company, in which 115 workers will participate.
