Men may compete in artistic swimming (synchronized swimming) at the Olympic Games starting in Paris in 2024, World Aquatics said Thursday, as part of a move toward inclusion that athletes called the realization of an “impossible dream.”
The world sports body said in a statement that each team of eight will be allowed to have a maximum of two men at the Games according to the new rules, and 10 teams are set to compete in Paris after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) gave his approval.
The artistic swimming it was called synchronized until 2017 and has been part of the Games since 1984, but although men have competed in the World Aquatic Championships since 2015, they had not been allowed to participate in the Olympic Games.
“The inclusion of men in Olympic artistic swimming was once considered the pipe dream,” said American Bill May, the first men’s world champion in the inaugural mixed duet technical event at the 2015 World Aquatics Championships.
“This shows that we all need to dream big. The male athletes have endured. Now, thanks to their perseverance and the help and support of so many, all athletes they can stand alongside each other equally, reaching Olympic glory.”
Italian Giorgio Minisini, world champion in the mixed duet technical routine in 2017 and 2022, called the announcement an important milestone.
“The evolution of our sport towards inclusion is going from strength to strength and this decision by the IOC and World Aquatics It will help us become an example for the entire Olympic movement,” he said.
