Less than 24 hours after his unexpected departure from Tony Stewart Racing, ten-time World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion Donny Schatz has secured a ride with Big Game Motorsports for the next seven series events. He will join reigning champion David Gravel as a teammate, piloting his traditional No. 15 car.
Big Game Motorsports owner Tod Quiring confirmed the news on Thursday.
“We’re excited to have Donny be a part of the team for the next two and a half weeks,” Quiring said in a statement. “Donny has produced a storied career with his 10 World of Outlaws championships and more than 300 World of Outlaws wins. He is also known as one of the cleanest race car drivers in the history of the sport and he does a tremendous job of taking care of equipment. All of that combined with the support from our crew and driver, David Gravel, made it an easy decision to create this second team while the World of Outlaws are racing close to our shop the rest of August.”
Schatz will debut with the team on Friday at the Big O Showdown at Ogilvie Raceway in Minnesota, followed by a race at Jackson Motorplex on Saturday. The schedule continues Tuesday at Mississippi Thunder Speedway in Wisconsin before Schatz returns to his home state of North Dakota for events at River Cities Speedway on August 22 and Red River Valley Speedway on August 23.
The temporary arrangement is scheduled to conclude on August 30-31 at the L.G. Everist Huset’s Shootout at Huset’s Speedway, which is owned by Quiring. This partnership allows Schatz to preserve his remarkable streak of 1,600 consecutive World of Outlaws starts, a run that dates back to July 31, 2003, the last series event he missed.
Schatz was not immediately available for comment.
