Mexico establishes itself as the first customer of US apples

Around 98% of total apple imports to Mexico came from the United States, according to data from the Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The United States is a year-round supplier with numerous advantages, including exportable supply, proximity, and established logistical advantages. In turn, Mexico is by far the largest export market for US apples. In the 2020/2021 campaign, approximately 38% of the export volume of US apples went to Mexico, followed by 24% to Canada and 8% to Taiwan.

Chile is also a regular supplier to Mexico, but only in small volumes compared to US-Mexico trade.

According to the USDA, large producers in Chihuahua and Coahuila are increasing refrigerated and controlled atmosphere storage capacity to preserve and offer quality apples throughout the year, just like the United States.

The USDA estimates that Mexico will import 265,000 tons of apples in the 2022/2023 season. This figure is slightly lower (-0.5%) than the previous campaign.

Mexico’s production is insufficient to meet domestic demand, so the country generally supplies itself with around 30% through imports.

Imported apples, which are available to the consumer at a higher price, will continue to supplement domestic production, but in the short term, this demand for imported products will be based on wealthier consumers and a rebound in food service sectors. and hospitality/tourism of Mexico.

The consumption forecast in Mexico for the 2022/2023 season is 905,100 tons. From the USDA’s perspective, affordability issues will continue to hinder consumption growth for items like apples.

For the 2022-2023 season, the USDA projects that Mexico will reach 58,840 planted hectares, with a production of 641,000 tons and exports of 900 tons.
