Serbian President announces the removal of barricades on the border with Kosovo

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucicannounced at the last minute on Wednesday the removal of the barricades on the Kosovar Serb border as of this Thursday after having held a meeting with the Serb minority in Kosovo.

According to the Serbian president, the Serbian citizens in Kovovo told him that “they do not want to harm their country” and have explained that they will remove the barricades installed after the rise in tensions, although the mistrust of the Kosovar authorities “has not disappeared ” reported the newspaper Politics.

Vucic said that the barricades cannot be removed in two hours and that the process will take between 24 and 48 hours, conveying the threats that they would be installed “forever” by the minority. Serbia in Kosovoif Pristina continues the “terror against the Serb population”.

Likewise, the Kosovar Serbs asked the Serbian government for guarantees that they will never recognize the “independence” of Kosovo “in any of its forms”, according to the aforementioned newspaper.

Meanwhile, Vucic said that the removal of the barricades “has nothing to do with the return of the institutions” and that the Serbs in Kosovo will defend him in “any decision he makes” if the Pristina authorities stop them.

Serbia asked NATO in mid-December to deploy 1,000 Serbian security forces in Kosovo, an unprecedented request, based on a United Nations resolution; however, Vucic stated that he expected a negative response from the North Atlantic Alliance.
