Queretaro, Qro. During 2022, the construction industry broke a record in the creation of formal employment in the entity, according to records of jobs registered with the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS).
The highest level of employment was registered in October of this year, with 63,593 jobs in this sector, a figure that decreased (-0.8%) to 63,107 in November; however, in the eleventh month of the year the second employment record was maintained.
The construction industry closed December 2021 with 53,622 workers affiliated with the IMSS; from January to November 2022, it added 9,485 new jobs, an increase of 17.7% compared to the end of 2021.
Throughout 2022, October was the month with the highest incorporation of jobs to the IMSS, with 2,429 job registrations in the construction industry, a monthly increase of 4%, compared to the 61,164 positions that were held until September.
Next, the second month of the year with the most workers registered with the IMSS, in the construction sector, was August with 1,556 registrations, a 2.6% monthly increase.
However, the final balance of the last month of the year, December, is yet to be known, since in the same month of 2021, 1,587 jobs were lost in this economic activity.
The president of the Mexican Chamber of the Construction Industry (CMIC), in Querétaro, Óscar Hale Palacios, highlighted that with the increase in employment that took place in October, the industry set an unprecedented figure.
“From September to October we obtained an increase of (almost) 5% in the registration of formal workers with the IMSS. In one month, practically 2,500 workers from the construction area were registered, we have already exceeded 60,000. We have never had so many workers from the construction industry formally registered in the industry in Querétaro”, he explained.
Therefore, he predicted that the industry will experience an important closing of the year in terms of job creation, despite having been a difficult year for this sector that is still far from resuming pre-pandemic activity.
However, in terms of employability, in November 2022 the construction industry exceeded by 9.9% (with 5,685 more positions) the 57,422 jobs it generated before the pandemic, in November 2019.
Regarding the year that is about to end, it was in August when the barrier of 60,000 jobs was overcome: in July there were 59,983, in August it reached 61,539, in September 61,164, in October 63,593 and in November 63,107 jobs.
