WHO asks China for transparency in data on new wave of Covid-19

The World Health Organization (OMS) met this Friday with Chinese leaders to discuss the Covid-19 situation and request transparency in the exchange of data on the new wave of infections in the Asian giant.

“A high-level meeting took place on December 30 between the WHO and China on the current wave of cases,” this UN agency said in a statement.

“The OMS called for a constant and real-time exchange of epidemiological data, as well as vaccination data, especially for the vulnerable population and those over 60 years of age,” he added.

This meeting took place after the director general of the OMSTedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, criticized the lack of information provided by the Chinese authorities.

According to OMSheads of the Chinese Health Commission, with functions similar to those of a ministry, provided them with data on the strategy to control and stop the spread of the virus and encourage vaccination in the country.

The UN agency “recalled the importance of vaccination and immunizers that protect the vulnerable population from severe forms and death.”

He also “called on China to strengthen control of the sequencing of the virus.”

The meeting took place on the same day that France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Israel and South Korea announced that they will require a Covid-19 test, with a negative result, from all travelers from China.

These countries fear that the wide circulation of the virus in the Asian giant will favor the appearance of new variants.
