Panama seized 128 tons of drugs in 2022, one of the highest seizure figures in the history of the Central American country, President Laurentino Cortizo announced this Monday.
“In the year 2022, 128.6 tons of drugs were seized,” Cortizo said during a speech before the National Assembly.
A year ago Cortizo announced that in 2021 drug seizures, mainly cocaine, reached 128.7 tons. This amount pulverized the previous record, established in 2019 with 90 tons of drugs in one year.
Panama is the gateway to Central America of the drug that goes from South America, mainly Colombia, the world’s largest producer of cocaine, to the United States, the largest global consumer of this drug.
The Central American authorities have also detected an increase in drug trafficking, through Caribbean ports, to Europe.
In 2021, the Central American countries seized at least 248 tons of drugs, of which some 200 were cocaine and the rest, for the most part, marihuana.
What was confiscated that year exceeded by 38% the 180 tons that, according to United Nations data, were seized in 2020.
Panama, with 128.7 tons, and Costa Rica with 70.8 tons, led the forfeitures in central America.
