Greece asks the European Union to take action on the shortage of medicines

The Greek authorities asked the European Commission on Tuesday to take measures to alleviate the shortage of some medicines which affects pharmacies in Greece, as well as in other countries of the European Union.

“It is imperative to adopt ambitious policies in the whole of the EU to fix this problem”, since “the internal processes of the Member States” are not enough, assured the Greek Minister of Health, Thanos Plevris, in a letter sent to the European Comission.

“The reinforcement of production in the EU” would be a solution, he maintains in the letter that was addressed to the Cypriot Stella Kyriakides, European Commissioner for Health.

Greek media published on Tuesday a list of more than a hundred medicines that are in short supply in Greek pharmacies, including numerous antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, anti-fever medicines and cough syrups.

The union of pharmacists of Greece has warned since October of the growing number of drugs that are in short supply.

Faced with this problem, the National Medicines Agency (EOF) of this southern European country prohibited the export of those medicines that are rarely present in the domestic market.

The shortage in pharmacies also affects many other European countries, such as Germany or France.

This is “a global problem,” Plevris warned in his letter.
