Moscow. The toll of the Ukrainian New Year’s attack on the town of Makéyevka, in the annexed Donetsk region, rose to 89, Moscow acknowledged yesterday, after Russian villagers gathered in several cities to express their anger and pain.
“The number of our dead comrades rises to 89,” Lieutenant General Sergei Sevriukov said in a video released by the Defense Ministry. More bodies were found under the rubble, he added.
One of the main reasons for the attack was “the use of mobile phones” by the soldiers, which allowed them to reveal their location, he said.
Ukraine attacked a makeshift base in Makéyevka early on January 1 with a US HIMARS rocket system, Sevriukov explained.
The attack occurred just after Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered his traditional New Year’s message.
Relatives of the victims ask Putin for an answer to the attack.
